Thursday marks the 32nd anniversary of the horrific crimes, including the infamous "live pyre" war crime, that took place in Pionirska Street and Bikavac in Visegrad, in June 1992.
Alongside the atrocity that took place on June 14, 1992, in Pionirska Street, these events represent some of the most harrowing war crimes committed during the Bosnian War.
In the Visegrad neighborhood of Bikavac, located in the easternmost part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a memorial will be held on Thursday in the courtyard of Meho and Dervisa Aljic to commemorate the anniversary of the “live pyre” where members of the Army and police of the Republika Srpska detained and then burned alive over 70 Bosniak women and children.
The youngest victim was just one year old. The sole survivor of this crime is Zehra Turjacanin, who testified about the horrors in Bikavac before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
Milan Lukić was sentenced to life imprisonment, and Sredoje Lukic received a 27-year sentence for the crime in Bikavac. Trials for the crimes in Visegrad have also been conducted in domestic courts in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
