The Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ZFBiH) have informed the public that severe weather conditions on October 3 and 4, 2024, caused extensive damage to a 17-kilometre stretch of railway between Ostrozac and Grabovica. This disruption has resulted in the complete suspension of both passenger and freight services on the Sarajevo-Capljina-Sarajevo line.
According to ZFBiH, the most critical damage occurred in the Donja Jablanica area, particularly at the Komadinovo Spring site, where torrential rains triggered a massive landslide. This landslide destroyed several drainage structures, leaving a 200-meter section of the railway track hanging precariously in mid-air, completely severing the line.
Technical teams from ZFBiH are on-site, working to assess the full extent of the damage. However, due to the scale of the destruction, the organization has acknowledged that it cannot resolve the issue independently. As a result, ZFBiH has already reached out to the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Federal Ministry of Transport and Communications for assistance in repairing the damaged infrastructure.
In the meantime, ZFBiH is appealing to both passengers and freight clients to seek alternative transportation methods for the affected Sarajevo-Capljina route. The railway company emphasized the severity of the damage and the likely duration of repair efforts, urging patience and understanding while work is underway to restore the line.
