Trebevic cable car was put into operation on April 6th, just before 11:30 am, after 26 years of being out of service.
The ceremony which was held under the Day of the City of Sarajevo was attended by numerous delegations and guests from the country and the region.
Present at the starting station of Trebevic cable car at Sarajevo neighbourhoodBistrik were: BiH High Representative Valentin Inzko, FbiH Prime minister Fadil Novalic, FbiH Interior Minister Aljosa Campara, Deputy Speaker of FBiH Parliamentary Assembly House of Representatives Sefik Dzaferović, BiH Minister of Transport and Communication Ismir Jusko, Head of SDA party Cantonal Board Asmir Sarajlic, BiH Council of Ministers Chairman Denis Zvizdić, Speaker of Sarajevo Canton Assembly Ana Babić, Canton Sarajevo Prime Minister Adem Zolj and the Mayor of Sarajevo Abdulah Skaka. N1's cameras also recorded the presence of Milan Bandic, the Mayor of Zagreb, Robert Prosinecki, manager of BiH national football team, Ivica Saric, the champion of the Sarajevo National Theater opera and numerous other guests.
The cable car opened under the motto “Trebevic is coming back to town.” Sarajevo Mayor Abdulah Skaka spoke at the opening of Trebevic cable car, welcoming the attendees. He said that the last demolished symbol of Sarajevo has finally been demolished.
He said that Sarajevo is the center of the region, today. He thanked all the guests who attended the opening of Trebevic cable car, along with the cities of Vienna, Ankara, Zagreb, Dubrovnik and Moscow for making this date even more festive.
“This would not have happened without Edmond Offerman and his wife. I would also like to thank all the previous mayors who initiated this project, as well as all the prime ministers from all the levels of government. We want to reconcile the people together,” Skaka said.
Edmond Offermann, an American nuclear physicist of Dutch descent, living in Switzerland, who is also married to a woman from Sarajevo, donated BAM 7.5 million for the reconstructruction Trebevic cable car. Offerman said that the reconstruction was initiated over a phone call.
“It was 2008 when I called a man who was interested in the reconstruction. That man was Anto Domazet, professor at the Faculty of Economics in Sarajevo. He made a report on what needs to be done for the reconstruction of the cable car. I called the professor and told him: We can do it! This is today isthe result of that phone call,” Offerman said.
Opening of the Trebevic cable car is just one of the numerous events to mark April 6th, the Day of the City of Sarajevo. The main event is scheduled for 19:30 pm, when the solemn session of Sarajevo City Assembly will be held at the town hall, where April 6th award will be awarded.
