Several hundred people gathered at Wednesday’s protest following the shooting of a journalist in the Montenegrin capital the previous evening.
The crowd gathered in front of the Montenegrin government headquarters included journalists from most of the country’s media as well as representatives of international organizations and politicians.
Vijesti daily newspaper investigative journalist Olivera Lakic was shot in the leg in front of her apartment building on Tuesday night. She was assaulted at the same place six years earlier following a series of articles about the illegal tobacco trade.
Vijesti Director Zeljko Ivanovic said at the protest that he was not surprised by the attack on Lakic, adding that she survived several attacks and threats.
European Union Delegation chief Aivo Orav and US Embassy official Judy Kuo visited Lakic in hospital and OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Harlem Desir is expected to arrive in Podgorica during the day.
