Hundreds of migrants are currently stuck on their path toward Western Europe around Bosnia’s Velika Kladusa area, and most of them are being fed by restaurant owner Asim Latic for free.
“There was a war in Bosnia as well and we survived all of those difficulties, I saw that these people need help. I am feeding them for four months already,” Latic told N1.
Unofficial estimates say there are between 600 and 700 migrants currently located in the Velika Kladusa area.
Latic said that locals, former regulars in his restaurant, are helping him with donations. His restaurant is now closed for the public as he only provides food to help the migrants.
“We cook for the migrants with the help from locals, there are four of us. All of the people helping us financially are my former guests, except for the two of us who cook,” Latic said, adding that he received no help from government institutions.
“Only the ‘Pomozi.ba’ organization stands behind me. I hereby call upon the government to support us,” he said.
Latic and his colleagues hand out up to 600 meals daily, for lunch and for Iftar, the evening meal eaten after a day of fasting during Ramadan. They cook in shifts, in the morning and in the afternoon.
Latic said he keeps in touch with the migrants even after they leave Bosnia, and that they are very thankful.
“How would you feel if you would hear from someone who helped you in 1992 (when the war in Bosnia began)?” he asked.
He said he will keep helping up until he has the money to do so, and while he is “alive and healthy”.
