After his release from a Turkish detention centre, Bosnian student Selmir Masetovic wrote on social media that he did not have a hard time during his detention and thanked Bosnians for their calls for his release.

Masetovic was arrested in the Turkish city of Usak on May 22 on suspicion he is a member of FETO, which Turkey declared an armed terrorist organisation, declaring it responsible for the 2016 coup attempt in the country.

“What we call Bosnia is not just a piece of land in the Balkans,” Masetovic quoted Bosnia's first President, Alija Izetbegovic, in a Facebook post.

Bosnia’s Embassy in Ankara had been following the case closely and requested for the young man to be released pending trial, while citizens in his hometown in Bosnia, Gradacac, had organised a support gathering calling for his release.

“If is weren’t for all of you, maybe I would not be able to write this post today. The news even got to the prison, as I was told ‘Bosnia loves you a lot’ as I was leaving,” he said.

A court in Turkey released Masetovic from detention pending trial on Tuesday but barred him from leaving the country. There are numerous pieces of evidence against Masetovic, who is facing serious charges, the Consul General of Bosnia in Istanbul, Began Muhic, said earlier.

Masetovic wrote he is “physically and mentally well” and that he had no problems in prison.

“I was surrounded by people who are educated, people who are professors, journalists and imams. During this time, I was calm, my consciousness is clear,” he wrote, adding that Allah has granted his prayers, and that he is “proud to be a Bosniak”.

“On this occasion I would like to thank all of you who supported me,” he wrote, mentioning his family, Bosnia’s consul in Istanbul, the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Turkey, his lawyer, and all of those who were part of the ‘Justice for Selmir’ group in Bosnia.

Whether Masetovic will be able to complete his exams in Turkey is yet to be decided.
