Impressive progress has recently been achieved in the Western Balkans, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini told reporters in Luxembourg prior to a meeting of EU foreign and defence ministers.
“Let me say that we see progress in the Balkans which is impressive. I witnessed the signing of the name agreement just 10 days ago, A historic moment that has to be supported. I had yesterday a very good session of the high-level dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina that is also going in an encouraging manner, very difficult but encouraging,” she said.
“The Western Balkans now needs the EU to be consistent and deliver,” Mogherini said, adding that the European Commission recommended opening pre-accession negotiations with Macedonia and Albania.
She said that process needs to be merit-based and explained that progress, when achieved, needs to be recognized and encouraged. “I hope and expect the member states will take the right decision,” Mogherini said.
