The Council of the European Union has extended the mandates of six EU Special Representatives (EUSRs) on June 25, 2018. Among them was the EUSR for Bosnia and Herzegovina Lars Gunnar-Wigemark.
Lars-Gunnar Wigemark's mandate as EUSR in Bosnia was extended for 14 months, until August 31, 2019. Lars-Gunnar Wigemark was appointed EUSR in Bosnia on March 1, 2015.
One other EUSR from the region whose mandate was extended is Nataliya Apostolova. Her mandate as EUSR in Kosovo was extended for 20 months, until February 29, 2020. Nataliya Apostolova was appointed EUSR in Kosovo on August 4, 2016.
Other EUSRs are: Peter Burian whose mandate as EUSR for Central Asia was extended for 20 months, until February 29, 2020, Alexander Rondos, EUSR for the Horn of Africa whose mandate was extended for 20 months, until February 29, 2020, Angel Losada Fernandez's mandate as EUSR for the Sahel was extended for 20 months, until February 29, 2020, Toivo Klaar's mandate as EUSR for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia was extended for 20 months, until February 29, 2020.
EUSRs promote the EU's policies and interests in certain regions and countries as well as issues of particular concern or interest for the EU. They play an active role in efforts to consolidate peace, stability and the rule of law. The first EU Special Representatives were appointed in 1996.
Currently, eight EUSRs support the work of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini. These are the six mentioned above and special representatives for Human Rights and the Middle East peace process.
