The city of Mostar commemorated the Srebrenica genocide in its traditional fashion – with a leap from Stari Most, the UNESCO-protected restored bridge that the city is known for.

The leap was made by Ermin Saric at exactly 11:07 am, symbolizing July 11, the day when, 23 years ago the bloody massacre in Srebrenica took the lives of more than 8,000 Bosniaks.

As opposed to the usual custom, there was no applauding after the jump. Instead, Saric was followed down to the Neretva river by a barrage of flowers, symbols for the innocence of the victims of Srebrenica.

“I want to send a message to all generations that they must never forget this date and that Srebrenica may never repeat,” Saric said.

The jump without an applause for the victims of Srebrenica takes place on July 11 every year.

“Simply to mark the anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica and to send a message that this may never be forgotten or happen to anyone anywhere again,” said member of the ‘Mostari’ diving club Sasa Orucevic.

Mostar is marking July 11 as a day of mourning. Flags in the city are raised halfway, most cafes and restaurants refrain from playing music, and many of the locals and tourists wear the Srebrenica Flower on their chest. The crocheted white flower symbolizes that the wearer stands in solidarity with the victims of the genocide.
