"Bihac residents feel unsafe in their own homes"

The migrant situation in Bihac is worrying, Una-Sana Canton (USK) Prime Minister Husein Rosic told N1. Bihac Residents are worried and unless the state authorities do something concrete, he said they will be forced to take drastic measures in line with their competencies and the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The residents are very worried, disappointed and they expect a reaction from state authorities, to act preventively and to stop any kind of unrest that could happen. They feel unsafe in their own homes,” Rosic said. “Today (Friday) we had a meeting and we clearly said we can’t wait any longer.”

Talking to N1, he Confirmed he invited the Council of Ministers Chairman Denis Zvizdic to schedule a session in Bihac, in order to be familiarised with the situation.

“I invited Denis Zvizdic to hold a regular session of the Council of Ministers and then to schedule an extraordinary session here in Bihac. It would be good if they could witness the situation first hand and talk to Bihac residents who have had to live through this for the past couple of months. I haven’t received a confirmation on this proposal,” he adds.

So far, he said, the Cantonal authorities are keeping the situation under control, but it is only a matter of time when this will not be possible.

The Friday session of the Cantonal Assembly concluded that all migrants heading to Bihac and Velika Kladusa, two northernmost cities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the border with Croatia, will be returned to where they came from in case that they do not have adequate documentation.

More than 9,800 migrants were treated by Bosnia's Foreigners’ Affairs Service from the beginning of 2018 until July 31.

According to the law, migrants must express their wish for an asylum in order to stay in Bosnia legally, which was done by more than 8,000 migrants so far. Still, no migrant received the asylum which means that Bosnia is not their final destination.
