Police discovered and apprehended over 2,000 migrants on the territory of the Republika Srpska (RS) entity, Bosnia's Serb-dominated part, since the beginning of this year, RS Police Director Darko Culum told a press conference on Tuesday.
Most of these migrants, who come from 22 different countries, were found on the territories of Bijeljina, Zvornik and Trebinje municipalities, located near the eastern Bosnian border.
Culum told media that a coordination body in charge of monitoring the illegal migrants’ movements in this entity has concluded that the RS has no adequate capacities or conditions for accommodating and taking care of migrants. According to him, the RS Government will secure “all the necessary logistics for their humanitarian transit” over the RS territory, if needed.
“Police administrations and local communities will intensify cooperation with citizens regarding the discovering and searching for migrants, and their fast transport over the territory of (the Republika) Srpska,” said the RS police chief.
Culum presides over the RS Government’ Coordination Body for monitoring of the illegal migrants’ movements on the Republika Srpska territory. He said that the RS police is cooperating with Bosnia and Herzegovina's Border Police on combatting the illegal entries of the migrants on the country's borders.
According to the state institutions, around 7,000 migrants entered the country this year, crossing mostly the border with Serbia. Most of them applied for the asylum, as a part of the regular procedure, but a very few have done so. As the migrants say, Bosnia is only a temporary shelter on their way to the final destination in the western Europe.
The RS Government earlier adopted an information on a necessity to form a coordination body, which would be watching the migrants’ movements in this entity and operatively conduct the activities with an aim to monitor the entries, the stay and all movements of the migrants as well as their swift transport from the entity.
The coordination body consists of the representatives of the RS Police, the RS ministries, the Civil Protection Administration, the Red Cross and the Alliance of Municipalities and Cities.
