The European Union (EU) rejects any denial, relativisation or misinterpretation of the genocide in Srebrenica and condemns the use of inflammatory ethnopolitical rhetoric and actions, the EU Delegation in Sarajevo said on Tuesday.

The EU office’s statement came following the session of the National Assembly of the Republika Srpska (RS) entity, Bosnia’s Serb-dominated part, which discussed the 2004 Report of the Commission on Srebrenica.

“We call upon all political leaders and others in positions of authority in Bosnia and Herzegovina to lead the way in honouring victims and promoting reconciliation,” the EU Delegation said.

“The EU is a union of values; any country aspiring to join the EU is expected to comply with and promote EU values of democracy, human rights, tolerance and justice. This includes treating victims of genocide with the utmost respect and dignity,” said the statement.

The entity parliament held a session on Tuesday at the initiative by RS President Milorad Dodik and adopted a conclusion demanding from the RS Government to annul the Commission on Srebrenica’s Report concerning the events that took place in that town in July 1995.

Dodik earlier said that the report was “tendentiously created” and assessed it as “a fake report created to torture Serbs and change the nature of the war in Bosnia.”
