The Serbian authorities are considering a re-introduction of mandatory military service for young men, President Aleksandar Vucic told reporters at the Batajnica airbase on Tuesday.

Speaking after the handover of 2 MiG-29 fighters to the airforce, Vucic said that the idea under consideration is to bring back conscription in the year 2020 or 2021. He said the tour of duty would be for three or six months.

“We are still thinking. I won’t promise anything about this. It depends on the finances,” Vucic said.

Military service would give the men who served an advantage when applying for public sector jobs, he said.

Conscription was abolished by the Serbian government on January 1, 2011.
