Small infrastructure projects blooming ahead of election

As usual, construction and reconstruction of local roads and other smaller infrastructure projects intensified ahead of the October election. Politicians are being photographed at ceremonial openings of newly constructed bicycle paths, roundabouts and even “the first layer of asphalt” on a road.

The latter occurred in the Breza municipality, just north of Sarajevo.

Local officials stood on the dark-grey newly laid layer of asphalt on the Breza-Prhinje local road and cut a green ribbon, officially opening it.

N1 asked locals if they believe the road will soon get another layer of asphalt.

“I don’t think so,” and “I have no words for it,” were some of the responses.

Others were more optimistic.

“Everything is more or less done in this way, first they lay down a little bit, and then later they make something new,” one of the locals said.

“There are no rocks anymore, no tearing of shoes and cars, nothing,” another one said.

Meanwhile, the Center municipality in Sarajevo is also celebrating. A bicycle lane was built and a bicycle race was organised on it.

Municipal officials also praised the laying of gas pipes on in the Kromolj and Poljine communities. A valve was put into operation, and the municipal mayor attended the opening.

The Sarajevo’s Center municipality has a few days ago said that works on the reconstruction of some 1,000 metres of a road have started. It is a project worth BAM 180,000 and the deadline for completion is just ahead of the October 7 general election.

Municipality websites are currently full of such press releases, informing of the construction, reconstruction or completion of support walls, parks, parking areas, and roads, and workers are on the job daily.

In Republika Srpska (RS), Bosnia’s Serb-dominated semi-autonomous entity, roundabouts are being built. Some examples are the one in the Eastern New Sarajevo municipality or the one in the Eastern Ilidza municipality.

Some of them even had ceremonial openings, such as the one in Prnjavor in June. RS Prime Minister Zeljka Cvijanovic ceremonially opened a roundabout there. The project was worth BAM 428,000.
