Bosnia and Herzegovina's Presidency Chairman Bakir Izetbegovic said during a meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York on Monday that Bosnia expects to obtain the status of candidate for the European Union (EU) membership and activation of NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP).

The meeting took place ahead of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly during which Izetbegovic informed Guterres about the current political situation in Bosnia and the progress the country has made in its Euro-Atlantic integration.

The officials also discussed the relations in the region and their reflections on Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The UN's official congratulated the Presidency Chairman for the progress the country made on the road to the EU and praised the efforts in the reform processes.

The cooperation between Bosnia and the UN was assessed as very good. The officials emphasised the significance of the UN's project “Dialogue for the future – promoting coexistence and diversity in Bosnia and Herzegovina” which should expand to the rest of the region in its next stage.

Izetbegovic also underscored Bosnia's commitment to the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development project.

Bosnia and Herzegovina became a member state of the UN on May 22, 1992, and has participated in the work of the UN through the permanent missions in New York, Geneva, and Vienna, as well as through the embassy in Paris (UNESCO) and Rome (UNFAO).
