Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik advised President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic, who was invited to attend a hospital opening in Istocno Sarajevo on Friday, to call off the trip for the security reasons, Dodik's office said on Thursday.
“I sincerely urge you to postpone your visit to Istocno Sarajevo to after the upcoming election. I ask you that with a sincere wish and an honest intention to protect you from the attacks of all those who don't want the Serb people to have a better future,” Dodik wrote in the note he sent to the President of Serbia, not explaining the reasons behind his concern.
Dodik, who is the President of Bosnia's Serb-dominated entity Republika Srpska (RS), will attend a solemn opening ceremony for the hospital ‘Serbia’ in Istocno Sarajevo, two days before the general election take place throughout the country. Serbia's Vucic was invited to attend the ceremony but he did not officially confirm the attendance.
The city of Istocno Sarajevo consists of pre-war suburban areas of Bosnia's capital city of Sarajevo and is now located on the territory of RS. It borders the urban areas of Sarajevo, which is part of Bosnia's another entity, Federation (FBiH).
In the note he sent on the eve of the event, RS President asked Vucic not to allow the divisions of the Serbs in RS and Serbia, because that is one people.
“Republika Srpska, its people and myself, as the President, will be grateful to you forever for your unreserved support,” he added.
Dodik asked for a meeting with the President of Serbia as soon as Monday in Belgrade, to make plans for further cooperation between RS and Serbia.
In a brief response on Thursday evening, Vucic said he would not come to the hospital opening.
“I accepted President Dodik's plea and request. I won't go to Istocno Sarajevo. I am asking the Serbs to carry out the election in Bosnia and Herzegovina in a democratic atmosphere,” Serbia's President said adding that Serbia never interfered with election processes in Bosnia contrary to others.
