Novi Pazar's City Council decided to name one of the central squares in the city by the late Hatidza Mehmedovic, former Head of the “Mothers of Srebrenica” Association. The motion is expected to be adopted by the city assembly in the next couple of days.
By naming the square in front of Novi Pazar’s Cultural Centre, the city wants to honour Mehmedovic for her bravery and courage for her fight for truth.
“We want to honour the recently deceased Head of “Mothers of Srebrenica” Association for her heroism and sacrifice,” Novi Pazar Mayor Nihar Bisevac said. “It is our obligation to remember her and all the innocent victims of the Srebrenica genocide.”
Novi Pazar is a city located in the Raska District of southwestern Serbia. It is the cultural centre of the Bosniaks in Serbia and the historical region of Sandzak.
The Head of the “Mothers of Srebrenica” Association, Hatidza Mehmedovic, has died on Sunday, July 22.
As the Head of the association, Mehmedovic was a vocal activist who raised awareness for the Srebrenica genocide, often referred to as the worst crime committed on European soil since WWII, and advocated for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.

In 2015, the Novi Pazar City Assembly decided that July 11 will be marked as the Remembrance day of victims of the genocide against the Srebrenica Bosniaks.
On July 11, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces overran the eastern Bosnian enclave and rounded up the town’s Muslim Bosniaks, separated men from women and little children and systematically executed some 8,000 men and boys.
Two international courts, The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and the World Court later ruled that the massacre was an act of genocide.
Mehmedovic lost two sons, Almir (18) and Azmir (21), as well as her husband Abdulah (44), in the massacre and returned to Srebrenica in 2003. She had been fighting for the truth about Srebrenica to be told for more than 20 years.
