Nick Butter, a British runner on a journey to finish a full marathon in 196 countries of the world for a humanitarian cause, has on Monday completed his 108th run and it happened in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo.
“This was my first time in Sarajevo and I loved it,” said Butter in N1's ‘Dan uzivo’ programme.
Butter, who describes himself as an explorer and adventurer, set off on this adventure 388 days ago because, as he pointed out in his personal blog, he believed in leaving a legacy.
“If I’m lucky enough to get to the point in life when I’m old and grey, chatting with my grandchildren I want to know I've explored every inch of the planet. I want to have exhausted every ounce of my potential, challenged myself beyond what is comprehensible and leave the planet knowing I did everything in my power to make the best use of my time,” he wrote on his website.
On the way to reach his goal, Butter is also raising funds for a charity organisation in the UK that works to improve the care and welfare of those affected by prostate cancer.
He has over 10 more months to finish the project and, hopefully, to raise 255,000 British pounds.
Butter himself has a friend fighting the prostate cancer. “He is one of those who inspire others and still he is facing death,” said the British runner, explaining that this triggered him to raise awareness about this illness and do something about it.
Speaking of his experience in the countries he has seen and ran before Bosnia, Butter said every country was a special story. Due to high air temperature and hilly terrain, the hardest was his Haiti marathon.
The Sarajevo run was great despite the rain that was pouring the whole day, said Butter. He was accompanied there by a local group of runners and UK Ambassador in Bosnia, Matthew Field.
“It was easier than usual today. People I ran with were great although it was rainy and wet.”
“I wanna do something nobody has done ever before and that's running a marathon in every country of the world. I'm already at 108th country,” he said.
The journey continues in Serbia, followed by Kosovo and Macedonia after which Butter will depart for Asia. He has a little over 10 months to reach his goal and break the world record.
