Authorities in the central Bosnian towns of Zenica and Busovaca have declared a state of natural disaster after floods hit a large number of their settlements, the Central Bosnia Canton (SBK) Civil Protection Administration said on Sunday.

The situation is critical at several locations, where the floods caused serious damage on roads and houses, said Zenica Mayor Fuad Kasumovic who is also the Commander of the Civil Protection Headquarters.

“Zenica has four drainage basins, and each of those locations today is facing serious problems. Some 20 houses were flooded at one of those locations, Tetovo,” Kasumovic told N1, explaining that the floods were caused by heavy rainfall and melting snow.

All teams have been deployed and they will be working as long as necessary “ to save everything that can be saved,” he added.

The central town of Busovaca has been cut from the nearby town of Kiseljak after the roads were suspended due to floods.

Water supply for the town of Vitez, also in the central Bosnia, was cut after the landslide near the water supply system activated. Several landslides activated in two nearby settlements.

A landslide in the central municipality of Gornji Vakuf – Uskoplje has demolished a house, threatening other houses, local news portals reported. The local road connecting the village of Borova Ravan with the nearby villages was briefly closed due to the landslide’s activation.

Residents of settlements in the central municipalities of Travnik, Novi Travnik, Bugojno and Fojnica also faced the damage caused by floods.

Chief of the Federation's Civil Protection Administration Fahrudin Solak told N1 there were two critical spots in the country at the moment, and those are the municipalities of Hadzici and Busovaca.

The Civil Protection Administration deployed teams of 50-60 persons to the critical areas.

“There are no dramatic scenes but we cannot leave anything to chance,” said Solak.

The management of civil protection administrations, road management enterprises and hydro-power plants’ management in both of Bosnia’s entities, Federation (FBiH) and Republika Srpska (RS), scheduled a meeting for Monday to discuss possible solutions to prevent further floods and recover from the damage that the floods caused this weekend on their territories.
