Sarajevo will get a new park located on a hill above the city, which will feature numerous attractions for young and old and is to be opened end of April, authorities said on Wednesday.
It will take some 20 minutes to drive to the new ‘City Forest’ park on Grdonj. Entrance will be free.
The project is being completed by Sarajevo’s forest authority with the help of Turkey and support of the Old Town Municipality.
“We agreed that the ceremonial opening of the park will take place on April 30, so that the citizens can already use it on May 1 (International Workers’ Day),” Old Town Mayor Ibrahim Hadzibajric said.
Officials in Turkey have years ago expressed a wish to build such a park outside of their country. The ‘City Forests’ include woods surrounding cities and populated areas and their aim is to increase the quality of life by offering equipment for exercise, ecologic and social activities.
A similar park can be found in Istanbul, the Florya Ataturk forest, as well as in Konya, the Meram, and in Balekesir, the Degirmenbogazi.
The one in Sarajevo will have a restaurant, five public faucets, a sightseeing platform, a buffet, a wooden bridge, a small lake, benches, fountains, 25 picnic houses, a playground, a fitness area, walking paths, a conference hall and numerous other attractions.
