It comes as no surprise that Bosnia and Herzegovina is not as among the top 10 healthiest countries in the world. Furthermore, Bosnia is not even in the top 40, but 42nd on Bloomberg's health index.
The first three places belong to Spain, Italy and Iceland and the criteria based on which they rated the countries are the duration of life, tobacco use, body weight, ecological factors such as access to clean water and sanitary conditions.
According to the latest Bosnia Statistics Agency’s data for 2016, the total health expenditures in the country amounted to some 2.8 billion (approx. €1.4 billion). This sum represents all money spent on activities whose primary role is to restore, improve and maintain the health of the population.
The Statistics Agency's data also shows that the expected life expectancy of Bosnian men is 73.7 years and while women live up to the age of 78.8.
The overall health largely depends on the diet. In countries that were placed at the very top of the Bloomberg List, nutrition is mostly Mediterranean, while Bosnians mostly eat carbohydrate based foods.
