The US ambassador observed a medical refresher training conducted by the Maryland National Guard that offered Bosnian soldiers a chance to learn about the military methods and techniques used by the United States military, the US Embassy in Sarajevo said Friday.

The training was provided by the 175th Wing Medical Squadron of the Maryland Air National Guard, which is cooperating with Bosnia’s Armed Forces for the past 16 years.

The newly appointed US Ambassador Eric Nelson observed the training of the 4th Infantry Brigade, led by Colonel Zdravko Rezo.

The course “is a perfect example of the continued cooperation between the Armed Forces of BiH and the Maryland Army and Air National Guard,” he said during his visit, adding that the training ensures that members of Bosnia’s Armed Forces “are prepared to respond to a range of medical emergencies, which increases their operational readiness at home or abroad while supporting future deployments with U.S., NATO, and NATO partners.”

He said that Bosnians “should feel confident that their Armed Forces can react quickly to any emergency to keep the people of BiH safe.”

The US European Command and Bosnia’s Defence Ministry conduct 70 military-to-military exercises yearly, and the goal of the programme is to “share best practices and improve interoperability between” the Armed Forces and US military, the press statement said.

Many of these events involve the Maryland National Guard, which is tied to Bosnia and Herzegovina through the State Partnership Program which supports the NATO Partnership for Peace – a program aimed at creating trust between NATO and other states in Europe.
