Unfortunate events from the last weekend in Visegrad have brought discomfort among the citizens, especially the Bosniak returnees, Islamic Community leader in Bosnia Husein Kavazovic said on Wednesday, addressing the state top officials regarding the last weekend’s controversial nationalist gathering in the eastern Bosnia.
“The parade of paramilitary Chetnik units in Visegrad, at the same place where some of those who lined up had committed horrible crimes against innocent civilians and calling for new crimes, cannot be left unpunished, and the Islamic Community members rightfully expect something like this will happen never again anywhere Bosnia and Herzegovina, said the letter signed by Kavazovic.
The Sunday gathering of the Serbian nationalist Chetnik movement triggered strong reactions among the local and international officials in Bosnia.
Hundreds of sympathisers gathered to pay tribute to the WWII Chetnik leader Draza Mihailovic, who was convicted and executed in 1946 by the then authorities for the war crimes and treason he was charged with.
During the 1992-95 Bosnian war, the Serb nationalist wearing Chetnik insignia expelled thousands and killed hundreds of ethnic Muslims in Visegrad. Last Sunday, those who attended the gathering sang the songs that glorified atrocities and announced new ones, which outraged the Bosniak returnees in the town.
Kavazovic also informed the international community’s top representatives in Bosnia about the content of the letter he sent to the Presidency members and Chairman of the Council of Ministers.
