The verdict to former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic before the Hague Court does not mean the abolition of Bosnia’s Serb-dominated Republika Srpska (RS) entity, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Saturday.

“To those dreaming that it could mean the abolition of the RS, my answer is that the RS is a Dayton Peace Agreement and a Constitutional category. And according to the Dayton Peace Agreement (which ended the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia) Serbia is one of the guarantors of its implementation, and there will not be any abolition of the RS,” Vucic noted, adding that this is the central and the most important question for Serbia, and its formal reaction to the verdict.

He said that his position to Karadzic’s final verdict, compared to the first instance verdict has not changed and that he thinks Serbia should look to the future and its own development – how to improve itself economically and politically.  

Former Bosnian-Serb leader and the first President of the RS Radovan Karadzic was sentenced to life in prison by the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) which confirmed his involvement in the Srebrenica genocide which claimed the lives of some 8,000 Bosniak men and boys from the area of the eastern town of Srebrenica. The Court also found that Karadzic was involved in crimes against humanity that were committed across Bosnia, the four-year siege of Bosnia's capital – Sarajevo and four joint criminal enterprises.
