Serbia’s Vucic: I’m for demarcation with Kosovo, people are not

In an interview with the Belgrade-based Prva TV, Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic said he believed the demarcation with Kosovo was “absolutely the healthiest solution for Serbia and the Serbs,” but added the people would not accept it, the Beta news agency reported on Thursday.

Vucic said a referendum on the issue would be held if he had something to tell the people, but that currently there was no suggestion.

He mentioned a separation with Albanians last summer but did not elaborate. He also fell short of specifying the idea on Thursday.

“I’m for the demarcation, and I’m not ashamed. But the Serbs are against it, and I understood their message. We’re not ready to hear the truth about Kosovo even when everybody knows it. People won’t accept that, and it touches their emotions,” Vucic said.

Speaking about the forthcoming UN Security Council session on Kosovo following Pristina’s special police raid in the north, Vucic said the UN SC sessions were always important because of “the status issue” but added that a Paris meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron at the beginning of next month was more critical.

He reiterated he was not sure if the meeting would take place.

Earlier, Vucic said he would not have a bilateral meeting with Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci in Bratislava on Friday.

He added he would tell the truth about Kosovo and that it was necessary for the US to persuade Pristina to abolish the 100 percent import duties on goods from Serbia and Bosnia.

“I’m going there free from any guilt or responsibility regarding Kosovo,” he told the TV.
