Coexistence in diversity is a necessity and the only path for humankind, Sarajevo-born musician and composer Goran Bregovic told the audience following the screening of a documentary on his long-awaited upcoming concert, Three Letters from Sarajevo, taking place this weekend in the Bosnian capital.
‘A Small Documentary Film about 3 Letters’ screened on the 6th day of the 25th Sarajevo Film Festival presents the birth and a few initial performances of a concert for three violins and a symphony orchestra.
Artists appearing in the film come from all parts of the world and from the three Abrahamic religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. The three religions that are the wealth of Sarajevo and part of its tragic destiny, said the documentary's description.
In Bregovic's words, the concert's name refers to three cultural ways to play the violin – the Christian, the Jewish and the Oriental, which carry along different styles and emotions in music.
It happens exactly in Sarajevo, said the artist, as one of the rare places in the world that church bells can be heard along with the call for prayers from local mosques. The beauty of that overlapping and connecting is always the basis for his concerts, said Bregovic, one of the most internationally known modern musicians and composers with current place of residence in Paris.
