The former captain of Bosnia’s national football team, Emir Spahic, suffered severe injuries in a car accident near the south-eastern town of Gacko and was transferred to a Sarajevo hospital by an army helicopter, authorities said on Friday.
Police were informed shortly after midnight that Spahic’s Wrangler Jeep turned over.
The soccer star was conscious when he was taken to the Trebinje hospital with serious injuries.
“Although the situation is serious, Spahic’s life is not threatened and his condition is stable,” Bosnia’s Football Association said.
Spahic was the captain of Bosnia’s national soccer team from 2008 until the end of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
