The European Union Office, Kosovo's Central Election Commission (CIK) and Foreign Ministry agreed to form an EU monitoring mission which would observe the early general elections scheduled for October 6, the Beta news agency reported on Tuesday.
EU Kosovo Office deputy head Riccardo Serri said that the bloc would follow the elections in Kosovo for the fifth time and that the CIK issued recommendations, but they were ignored during the previous voting.
CIK head Valdete Daka said the monitoring of the elections was one of the most important parts of the process and that the signing the agreement showed that this institution was ready to upgrade the election process.
Daka added that besides the EU, the parties’ and civil society observers would monitor the voting.
The snap general elections in Kosovo were called after The Hague-based Special Court, formed to investigate possible war crimes committed by Albanians during the 1998-1999 armed conflict in Kosovo, had called outgoing Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj to give a statement as a suspect, prompting him to resign.
