There is no consensus in Bosnia over the country joining NATO and any statements saying that it will happen are false, the Serb member of Bosnia’s tripartite Presidency said after his Croat colleague discussed the issue with US Special Representative for the Western Balkans, Matthew Palmer, on Friday.

Palmer congratulated the Chairman of Bosnia’s tripartite Presidency and its Croat member, Zeljko Komsic, for his efforts toward maintaining Bosnia’s path toward membership in NATO when the two met on Friday during the 74th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Komsic thanked Palmer for the US’s consistent and clear support for Bosnia and its Euro-Atlantic integration process and said that the solution for the problems Bosnia is facing would be the country becoming a NATO and EU member.

But Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik, who vehemently opposes Bosnia making any steps toward membership in NATO, said that Palmer and Komsic are “ignoring the realistic situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.”

“He knows perfectly well that this will not happen, but he is still trying because Komsic tends to abuse the position of Chairman and tends to present the situation in Bosnia regarding that in an unrealistic way,” Dodik said.

“Two people who think alike have gathered and they are trying to achieve a breakthrough with false statements. Palmer knows well that there is no consensus regarding that, nor will it be reached,” he added.

The Bosnian Serb leader described Bosnia’s NATO membership as “a dream” of Komsic and Palmer.
