Dangerously polluted air and a thick fog had covered Sarajevo Friday morning, making Bosnia and Herzegovina's capital one of the most polluted cities in Europe.

The Bosnian capital has been at the top of the list of the most polluted cities in Europe for several years, especially during the autumn and winter, and that continues to be the case this year as well.

According to the data of air quality monitoring devices located within the United States Embassy complex in Sarajevo, the air quality index at 5 am stood at 204 and was characterized as “very unhealthy.”

According to the measurements at 7 am, the air quality index was 193, which falls into the “unhealthy” category.

During the winter season, the permitted concentration of suspended particulates is surpassed almost daily in Sarajevo and some other Bosnian cities. Major causes of this pollution are industrial plants, traffic, waste incineration and private homes.
