The Serbian Refugee Commissariat said on Tuesday that a total of 4,427 migrants, including 807 children were housed in its 17 refugee and asylum centers.
A press release on International Migrant Day said that most of the migrants were from Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan, Iraq and Bangladesh.
“Serbia has acted responsibly, humanely and in an organized manner with a maximum effort to meet standards in care, housing, legal, social and health care for migrants on its territory,” it said, adding that special care was being given to vulnerable categories of people with children provided with pre-school and elementary and high school classes.
According to the Commissariat, the migrants currently in Serbia have only one goal – getting to Western Europe as soon as possible. “Serbia is committed to playing an even more active partner role in resolving the migrant issue,” the press release said.
