The Specialist Prosecutor’s Office in The Hague brought first charges against the former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) for crimes committed during the 1998-1999 war in the then Serbia’s province, the Office has said in a statement carried by Radio Free Europe (RFE).

The judges are still to confirm the indictments if rule there is enough evidence.

The deadline for either confirming or rejecting the charges is six months.

The names of the indicted suspects will not be published before that ruling.

If the indictments are confirmed, and an accused pleads not guilty, there is a trial. In the case of guilty plea, the next step is to rule on the sentence.

If the charges are rejected, the case will be dismissed.

The Kosovo Specialist Chambers is in charge of “certain crimes against humanity, war crimes and other crimes under Kosovo law which allegedly occurred between 1 January 1998 and 31 December 2000.”

The KLA Association has said that so far some 250 of its former members were summoned by the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office to give statements either as witnesses or suspects.
