The coronavirus is preventing the elderly and sick people from leaving their homes but some citizens go out of their way to help them pay their bills, get groceries and with other chores.

N1 spoke to volunteers who are spending their spare time shopping for others and picking up their medication.

“This is to make this period of 14 to 20 days, as was announced, as easy as possible for some of our citizens and neighbours. Especially those older than 60 years who are currently facing a critical period,” said Faruk Gutic, one of the volunteers.

He said that many people are willing to help out in these efforts.

“Health workers have started contacting us and offering their services and help. It became obvious to me that all that is necessary is for someone to start doing something in order for all others to join in,” Gutic said.

“Certain organisations of the Red Cross in Bosnia’s Federation (FBiH) entity have put their resources, professionals and volunteers at disposal in case the elderly and weak need something. For example, a trip to the grocery store, picking up medication from the pharmacy or paying bills,” said FBiH Spokesperson Amina Kurtagic.

The volunteers are taking extra precautions because of the danger of the virus spreading but keep doing their work since many depend on it.

“We can not stop cooking meals because those people truly depend on our food,” said Maja Arslanagic, the Spokesperson of the Pomozi.ba humanitarian organisation.

“That is why we intensified measures in the kitchen – we disinfect the rooms, working areas and all the equipment,” said the spokesperson of the Pomozi.ba humanitarian organisation, Maja Arslanagic.
