A European Parliament MP from the Green Party/European Free Alliance said she was “shocked” when she heard that Sarajevo was the most polluted city in the world on several occasions this winter and that several other Bosnian cities were just behind it on the list.
Viola Von Cramon-Taubadel argued that the pollution in Bosnia affects the environment in EU countries in the region and asked the European Commission to decide on ways for Bosnia to participate in the European Green Deal – a plan to “take Europe to climate neutrality by 2050, and see European Union economies produce net-zero CO2-equivalent emissions by that date.”
She advocated for solidarity with Bosnian citizens whose lives are affected the most by the issue.
Von Cramon-Taubadel requested to know whether the future engagement of the EU in Bosnia will include goals to reduce the emission of harmful gasses from cars and heating.
The European Commission has six weeks to answer her question unless it is declared urgent, in which case it has to be answered in 10 days.
