The poisoned brown bear found Sunday near Sarajevo has died, Zoran Cegar, the man who took care of her before she and her cubs were taken to the Sarajevo Veterinary Faculty, said for N1 Monday evening.
Earlier, veterinary doctor Kenan Baltic said the bear had less than 5 percent chance to live, but the fact that she drank some water on her own and tried to open the small cage where the veterinary staff placed her two cubs, gave them hope.
“it’s unbelievable, yesterday we placed a small cage next to her and put her two cubs in it to calm her down because she was calling for them all the time. Even in such condition, lying down, she tried to open the cage with her paw to free her cubs. It’s the same instinct we humans have, except that she couldn't talk,” Stjepan Kvesic, one of the volunteers who were with the bear from the moment local hunters discovered her in a stone quarry near Sarajevo, told N1.

Zoran Cegar, who is Federation entity’s Chief of uniformed police with the Interior Ministry, said Sunday that he learned from the gamekeeper the bear was probably poisoned by snail bait which is used at this time of year to protect the crops.
He added that no institution was able to help them because neither the Federation entity nor Sarajevo Canton have an emergency vet service that would act in a situation like this, and had the bear been treated on time, it would have had much bigger chances for survival.
The momma bear left two three-month-old cubs behind, who now need constant attention. It is uncertain what will happen to them because the Sarajevo zoo is full and competent institutions do not have the capacity to take care of them.
