Heading on foot from the village of Turovi up Mt. Treskavica, south of Sarajevo, after a day-long walk visitors will be rewarded with a view of two breathtaking mountain lakes.
Crno jezero (The Black Lake), that sits on an elevation of 1,675 meters is surrounded by mountain peaks and meadows filled with flowers, mostly the endemic yellow Bosnian lily, (Lilium bosniacum).
Further down the mountain path sits Veliko jezero (The Big Lake) at an elevation of 1.548 meters. With its 220 meters length and 185 meters width, it is the biggest lake on the mountain and it is filled with trout.
Mt. Treskavica is known for its lakes that are being filled from glaciers but also for the many springs.
It’s been said that the 2,088 high mountain has 365 freshwater springs, including some that eventually turn into rivers, such as Zeljeznica, Bistrica, Ljuta, Bijela and Rakitnica.
