Bosnian capital Sarajevo and the northern city of Tuzla are deploying medical teams to Serbia's southwestern Sandzak region, to help its hospitals cope with the coronavirus epidemic situation that appears to be the worst in that country at the moment.

It was confirmed to N1 that the teams would consist of the staff of the University Clinical Centres from both cities as well as the staff of Sarajevo Canton's Emergency Department.

“As far as we are concerned, we are ready to provide the support in personnel and equipment,” said Tuzla Clinical Centre general manager, Vahid Jusufovic, adding that the two countries should communicate this through official channels.

Bosnia Presidency Chairman Sefik Dzaferovic confirmed the information about the medical teams arriving in Sandzak to Serbia's Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications Minister, Rasim Ljajic.

The Presidency earlier received the calls for the assistance from the General Hospital in Novi Pazar, the Sandzak region's largest town.

The Government of Bosnia's Federation (FBiH) entity held an urgent session on Tuesday and made the official moves towards the deployment of medical teams. It asked the state-level Civil Affairs Ministry to communicate the matter with the clinical centres and hospitals in Bosnia and Herzegovina, to assess their capabilities and provide assistance to the General Hospital in Novi Pazar.

Besides Bosnia's Islamic Community, which is sending 100,000 marks (approx 50,000 Euro) to Sandzak, a Sarajevo-based charity is about to secure necessary medical equipment for Serbia's region.
