The United States pledges never to forget the Srebrenica genocide, grieving with the families who tirelessly seek justice for the 8,000 innocent lives lost, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Saturday, marking the 25th anniversary of the genocide in this east Bosnian town which war overrun by Bosnian Serb forces in 1995.

“Today we mark a solemn occasion: the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.

The names of few places in recent history are so painfully etched in the time as that of Srebrenica – the site of the worst massacre in Europe since World War II.

The United States pledges never to forget that tragedy. We grieve with the families who tirelessly seek justice for the 8,000 innocent lives lost, all these years later. And we stand with our great friends in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A generation, it’s hard to believe. A generation has come of age since that horrific day.

Those of us who remember what happened a quarter-century ago must build a more peaceful, prosperous, and democratic future for that generation.

Let’s build a future that will benefit all peoples – regardless of race or religion – and unite us in shared values based on individual rights.

Let’s make it a brighter future, one in which the awful lessons of Srebrenica are remembered and never repeated.
