The southern city of Mostar has on Sunday for the 454th time hosted traditional diving competition from its UNESCO-protected Old Bridge and has seen a new winner after more than a decade.
Vedad Basic and Igor Kazic took the prize in two different categories, winning the highest scores among the competitors.
“I am happy because the dream that all Mostarians have has come true for me. I have been trying for two decades and finally won. It was unusual this year because of the coronavirus (pandemic) but I hope we will win that battle too. I'm not sure if I will compete next year, I am 40 now and I will think first,” said Basic.
Kazic, on the other hand, said he hoped this was not his last win.
The two divers took the recognition this year after Lorens Listo had been winning the competition for 13 previous years in a row. After the last year's event, Listo had retired.
This is the 454th time the event is taking place. The first one was recorded in 1664, but it only became an official competition in 1968 with two categories: jumping feet first and head first – the so-called ‘swallow.’
