The head of Bosnia’s Islamic Community (IC) wrote to ambassadors of several countries asking for a joint reaction from their governments to the latest attacks on Bosniaks in Montenegro, arguing that the same ideologies which caused crimes and persecution of Bosniaks in that country have returned.
The premises of Islamic Community in Montenegrin northern town Pljevlja were targeted by vandals who broke the door glass panes on Tuesday night and left threatening messages.
In the letter to the ambassadors of the United States of America, the United Kingdom, the Turkey, Germany, Italy, France and Russia, IC head Husein Kavazovic pointed out the past persecution and crimes committed against Bosniaks in Montenegro. He argued that their fears of it happening again are justified since they see the same ideologies that served as a basis for those past events in the political and public sphere in the country now, the MINA news agency reported.
Kavazovic also asked the foreign governments to appeal to religious leaders to refrain from spreading messages of hate and intolerance among citizens.
The incident comes days after Montenegro's parliamentary election, which sent President Milo Djukanovic's Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) into the opposition after nearly three decades of their rule.
