Sarajevo turns high school into isolation ward as Covid-19 cases surge

Sarajevo Canton's Crisis Staff decided during a Saturday emergency session to turn the 'Railway School Centre' into an isolation ward for patients with Covid-19 suffering from minor symptoms.

The school which houses three separate vocational schools (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and traffic school) will be equipped with 300 beds over the next seven days, and its capacity will be increased depending on the needs on the ground, the crisis staff noted.

These patients will be monitored and cared for by doctors from Sarajevo Canton.

The Crisis Staff was forced to make this decision following a surge in numbers of newly infected patients with Covid-19. Today alone the country reported over 1,200 new cases.

The surge resulted in the ‘Podhrastovi’ isolation ward within the University Hospital to reach its capacity in a matter of days.
Sarajevo General Hospital said they too would increase capacity by additional 30 beds.
