Over the past 24 hours 1,342 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Slovenia after 4,807 tests and 25 people have died, its government said on Sunday.

The number of infections since the start of the epidemic has reached 35,649, including 22,501 currently active cases.

The 14-day incidence has risen to1,074 per 100,000 inhabitants, 30 more than on Saturday.

The number of hospitalised patients has also risen, from 779 on Saturday to 821, as has the number of those in intensive care from 122 to 131.

The COVID-19 death toll stands at 357, the Health Ministry said.

Slovenian epidemiologists say the situation is still very serious and that one could not say that the second wave of the epidemic has peaked, Slovenian media said.

Hospitals are almost at capacity with 900 beds for COVID patients. It is expected that 1,200 will be needed.

The head of the government's COVID response team, Bojana Beovic, has said a solution to the problem is being sought urgently.
