Tax authorities said they intercepted on Sunday a vehicle carrying tens of thousands of counterfeit cigarettes which the smugglers could have sold for 41,050 Bosnian Marks at the black market.
The 8,210 packs had no excise stickers on them and were loaded onto a car that was redesigned to fit as many cigarettes as possible.
The operation was ordered by the State Prosecutor's Office and the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The car was stopped at the village of Rastelica on the Sarajevo-Konjic road.
Tax authorities will report the driver to the prosecutor for illegal trafficking of excise products.
To find the smuggled goods, officers used special equipment donated by the government of the United States as part of the Export Control and Related Border Security (EXBS) Program.
Tax authorities urged the public to take part in preventing such trafficking by calling a hotline and reporting suspects free of charge.
