Unknown activists tied small banners around the heads of statues of prominent cultural figures in Mostar with messages aimed to mobilize people to vote in local elections.

Messages such as “What are we leaving to our children,” #newMostar,” or “I can’t watch this any more,” were written on pieces of cloth that covered the eyes of the statues of Queen Catherine of Bosnia, Bruce Lee and Emina – a beauty to whom one of Bosnia’s most popular folk songs is dedicated to.

Photos of the statues flooded social networks and activists wrote that the current state of affairs in the city can be changed on December 20 if citizens cast their ballots en masse.

“It’s up to us,” the messages said.

Because of political bickering between two of the country’s three major ethnic parties over how elections should be organized in the city, Mostar has not held a local election since 2008.

Only in June this year did the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) and the Croat Democratic Union in Bosnia (HDZ BiH) reach an agreement on the issue, enabling the election to take place.

The local election everywhere else in Bosnia and Herzegovina took place on November 15 but the one in Mostar is scheduled for December 20.
