Bosnia's capital Sarajevo is the fourth most polluted city in the world according to Air Visual's dana for Thursday morning.
Air pollution index amounted to 196 and the concentration of PM2.5 particles amounted to 142.3 µg/m³.
Data from the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo show even greater pollution, and they labelled Sarajevo air quality as very unhealthy. According to their data, this morning at six o'clock the pollution index was 268.
Air pollution in Tuzla Canton was also very high and according to the Federation entity's Hydrometeorological Institute, it amounted to 188 in Lukavac while in Zivinice it was 175. Air quality was also rated as unhealthy with a 108 pollution index.
Sarajevo Canton declared a state of preparedness Wednesday as pollution levels continued to rise for several days in a row. The Federation entity's weather institute announced that weather will be mostly cloudy and stable with a weak wind of variable direction in the coming days. The occasional temperature inversion could lead to a significant accumulation of pollutants and deterioration of air quality, the weather institute said.
Residents with existing health conditions are recommended to bring their movement to a minimum while schools and kindergartens were told not to let students stay out during breaks.
