The goal of Tuesday’s protest in front of the building of the Office of the High Representative in BiH was to warn the international community of the harm the High Representative Christian Schmidt’s decision from October 2 can do the Bosnia’s statehood, academician Esad Durakovic who was one of the people who invited BiH citizens to the protest, told N1 on Wednesday.
Speaking about the fact that this time there were no representatives of political parties present at the protest Durakovic said they were blinded by election results.
“In previous protests, politicians were engaged and there were more people present. However, this time, according to my deep conviction, the politicians were stunned by the results of the [general] elections, by combinatorics in the distribution of seats. They deal with the current and what is within the scope of one election cycle. They lack statesmanship capacities and vision,” Durakovic said.
Like others before him, also called Schmidt's decision apartheid.
“If the majority is subordinated, regardless of the ethnicity in question, if it is subordinated to the dominance of the minority and they are not equal, then that is apartheid. This is a dramatic violation of the rights of citizens. I support a civic BiH,” he said.
High Representative Christian Schmidt imposed the changes to the Election Law in BiH as well as the changes to the Constitution of the Bosniak-Croat shared Federation (FBiH) entity, officially called the ‘Measures to improve the Federation Functionality’.
However, Bosnian Presidency member Zeljko Komsic disputed these changes saying the High Representative directly attacked the democracy of Bosnia and Herzegovina and deceived all voters in their intention to elect their representatives in the legislative bodies, especially those in the houses of people who are elected directly through cantonal assemblies.
He pointed out that the international community is purposefully maintaining this situation, that they have not sanctioned those forces that are destructive and want the dissolution of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“The decisions of the Human Rights Court should be implemented. They were absent in Schmidt's intervention. The international community created BiH as a dysfunctional state and only the international community can lead us out of that situation, but not by strengthening antagonisms and nationalisms,” he said.
The academic said that the situation is moving towards the division of Bosnia and Herzegovina along ethnic lines.
“We had the aggression where neighbouring countries fought for the territory of BiH and today such a scenario is possible and it remains to be seen whether Bosnian patriots will agree to it,” said Duraković.
