Bosnia and Herzegovina experienced a notable 8% drop in electricity production in 2024, with total generation reaching only 14.3 TWh compared to the previous year, according to Edhem Bicakcic, president of the Regional Committee of the International Council on Large Electric Systems SEERC (CIGRE). The decline was driven primarily by poor hydrological conditions, which severely impacted hydropower output. Hydropower plants generated 4.7 TWh in 2024, a steep 25% decrease compared to 2023. While thermal power plants maintained production at 8.4 TWh, wind farms, photovoltaic plants, and other distributed power sources contributed 1.2 TWh.
Despite this decline in production, electricity exports from Bosnia and Herzegovina increased by 8% to 8.4 TWh. Financially, this represented approximately 640 million Bosnian marks (€327 million), or 60% of the export value recorded in 2023. However, electricity imports surged by 57%, reaching 5.9 TWh, to meet domestic and export demands.
The net electricity export balance dropped significantly, with only 2.5 TWh exported in 2024—a 36% decline compared to the previous year. This reduction in net exports was mirrored financially, amounting to just 485 million Bosnian marks (€248 million), down 42% from 2023.
Electricity consumption remained steady at 11.3 TWh, the same as in 2023. However, fluctuating electricity prices on the energy exchange reflected the market's volatility. Prices peaked at €300 per MWh last week, while Tuesday’s price stood at €108 per MWh, rising to €180 per MWh on Wednesday.
The decline in production highlights the urgent need for improved strategies to mitigate the impact of environmental factors and stabilize Bosnia and Herzegovina's energy sector.
