Many public figures from the world of football, but also public officials and celebrities attended the commemoration ceremony for the legendary former football player and coach, Sarajevo-born Ivica Osim, who passed away on May 1.
Osim, who died in Graz, Austria, at the age of 81, was born on May 6, Sarajevo in 1941.
Bosnian football manager and former player, Dusan Bajevic, former footballer and current manager of Serbia’s national team, Dragan Stojkovic Piksi, football manager and former player Mehmed Bazdarevic and many other prominent sports figures paid tribute to Osim.
Stojkovic spoke quite emotionally about Osim.
“He left a deep mark in the former country (Yugoslavia). And we all respect and appreciate that,” he said, adding that he came to Sarajevo to show his immense respect for the football legend.
Among those present was also Zeljko Komsic, one of the members of Bosnia’s tripartite Presidency.
“We will not only remember Ivica as a sports legend and great man, but as a good person who contributed to the country in the most difficult moments. He never forgot his city, and most importantly, he never betrayed it. We must not forget this fact in our memory,” Komsic said.
“From Austria to Japan he was the best and most honourable in everything. You were the best Sarajevan on the planet. He loved all the cities in the world, but his own Sarajevo the most,” said Sarajevo’s mayor, Benjamina Karic.
