Dragan Covic, Speaker of the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina and President of HDZ BiH, has announced a new approach to the functioning of government institutions at all levels, set to commence immediately after the local elections in October.
“Regarding the Growth Plan, it is clear we gain nothing from constant disputes. We need to sit down at the table and, through the Coordination Mechanism, resolve all contentious issues. We must engage in integration activities, not only financially. It is highly irresponsible how we have handled our obligations under the Growth Plan. There are numerous issues that we will need to address through various levels of government institutions just a few days after the local elections,” Covic stated to Fena.
He emphasized that it is unrealistic to expect significant political activity in August, aside from routine tasks.
“We will need to establish a new working dynamic for both the executive and legislative branches and commence this process a few days post-elections to catch up on neglected matters. Specifically, we must draw the attention of European institutions to the positive aspects of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Many new individuals will join the European administration, and we need to familiarize them with our efforts, as the current perception of us is quite negative. We must change this image, which requires us to work differently and better. The last three months of this year will be very intensive for legislative and executive authorities,” Covic added.
According to Covic, expectations should not be overly high regarding changes in the U.S. and EU, including the arrival of new ambassadors and the upcoming presidential elections in America.
“The administration of such complex systems does not change with the replacement of one person, regardless of their importance. This person may have more or less understanding of our environment here, but nothing substantial will change. We need to collaborate with the current U.S. ambassador and the head of the EU delegation, as well as their successors. No major shifts should be anticipated. We are the ones who need to make changes, understand that this is our society and homeland, and work towards making it suitable for all our residents. Only then will we have external allies by our side,” he concluded.
