
The European Union has urged the Republika Srpska (RS) entity Government to withdraw draft legislation that imposes further restrictions on civil society organizations, as well as proposed amendments to the Republika Srpska Criminal Code that would remove gender identity as a protected category. In a statement, the EU reiterated that there can be no regression in fundamental values if Bosnia aspires to join the European Union. It emphasized the need for authorities in the country to uphold anti-discrimination standards and create an environment that supports the effective operation of civil society, in line with international human rights obligations and Bosnia’s European integration process.
Last week, the EU welcomed the adoption of two key laws seen as important steps toward the country’s EU accession. BiH has a realistic opportunity to formally open accession negotiations with the European Union in the coming months, provided that necessary conditions are met. The EU urged Bosnia’s authorities to prioritize progress that would directly improve the lives of citizens and to avoid actions that threaten fundamental rights and democratic values.
